Leading a team to ship
My first team leadership role combined hands-on React development with helping six engineers deliver across Pacific and Spain time zones.
- Organization
- Eventbrite
- My role
- Senior Software Engineer / Tech Lead, Multi-Event Management, Design Ops2020–2022
- My contribution
- Led the React frontend for Creator Collections; served as Scrum Master; trained engineers who joined through an acquisition.
Building for organizers at scale
As tech lead, I led the React frontend for Eventbrite Creator Collections. We delivered it in about three months.
I also refined a calendar workflow that let organizers schedule and modify up to 900 recurring events, including how recurring schedules and date ranges were presented.
Helping the team finish work
As Scrum Master, I led planning, refinement, and retrospectives. I helped the team break large features into smaller, shippable increments and clarify requirements before development, improving cycle time. Making bug triage and fixes part of sprint planning brought the backlog down to a sustainable level.
I introduced Mock Service Worker (MSW) for scenario testing and used that work to mentor a junior engineer, giving them hands-on React experience.
Sharing what I knew
Around the same time, I traveled to Vancouver to train a team of backend and Angular engineers who had joined through an acquisition. I helped them learn React, our design system, and the codebase. We later shipped Eventbrite’s App Marketplace, connecting third-party vendors with event creators.
During that period, I also gave my first international talk at React Vancouver: “The good, the bad, the design system.”
My scope was expanding from writing frontend code to helping other engineers build and deliver with it.
